Presence in Motherhood | Denver Motherhood/Birth Photographer + Doula

There is so much of me that struggles with finding presence in motherhood— especially as a mom, working as a birth photographer and doula in a busy city like Denver. Between chasing a toddler, homeschooling my Kindgartner, running a business, and managing ADHD— mine and my child’s— I know firsthand how challnging it can be to truly soak in these sacred moments.

The pitter-patter of my almost two-year-old daughter’s feet on the hardwood floor… The inquisitive expressions of my five year old as he questions everything from body systems and their mechanics to why mosquitos exist. These moments are fleeting, but society demands we move at warp speed — hustle, plan, and grind constantly.

And underneath it all there seems to be this relentless pressure to be the perfect parent to teach my kids every life skill, emotional regulation tool, and core memory they’ll need to thrive. That pressure becomes a loop I can’t break out of.
It’s not just parenting… it’s executive function lockdown.
What I call the “parenting prison” — where I’m stuck doing, teaching, fixing, managing... but rarely being.

In full transparency, sometimes I feel like I’m watching my kids grow up yet somehow missing it. It might be their childhood but it’s also my motherhood. It’s also my life. My story. And the only life that I will get. And that deserves stillness. It deserves to be honored as the sacred human experience it is.

I guess this is where being a birth doula and birth photographer has given me a powerful perspective. I’ve witnessed firsthand how honoring stillness — before, during, and after birth — transforms not only the birthing experience but motherhood itself. The power of presence, mindfulness, and simply being with your children is revolutionary.

Last month I attended such a magical workshop hosted by Lindsey Eden + Lauren Wright with Refresh Retreat and it truly restored something in me not just creatively but also in my being. I watched our beautiful model truly connect with her babies. Slow. Intentional. She was just with them. She wasn’t doing, or actively teaching… She wasn’t correcting or driven by this need to do more. She just was. And that was more than enough. That was everhing. To her. To her babies. And to that moment.
