Your Most Frequently Asked Questions About Birth Photography in Denver
Thinking about hiring a Denver birth photographer? You probably have a million questions racing through your mind. Birth is one of the most intimate and powerful experiences of your life—so of course you want to know exactly what it’s like to have a photographer (and in my case, a doula + photographer, aka “doulatog”) in the room.
I get asked the same questions over and over again, so let’s dive in. Here are the most frequently asked questions about birth photography in Denver and Colorado, answered honestly and from my heart.
When should I book a birth photographer?
The earlier, the better! Most families book during the second trimester, but I’ve had some reach out the day they find out they’re pregnant. Since births don’t exactly follow a schedule, my calendar fills fast. If you’re considering birth photography in Denver or the surrounding Colorado area, secure your spot early.
When do you come to the birth?
I join you once you’re in active labor usually when contractions are consistent and taking all your focus. That way, I’m not camping in your living room for three days, but I also don’t miss the big stuff. We’ll stay in touch, and when it’s time, I grab my camera bag and go.
How long will you stay?
As long as your story takes. Some births are a whirlwind, others are a marathon. Either way, I’m there to capture it. I also stay for the first postpartum hours… your golden hour… because those first snuggles, feedings, and sibling introductions are absolute magic.
What if I have a really long or really fast labor?
We rock with it! If it’s long, I settle in. If it’s precipitous, I still do everything in my power to make it. If baby beats me there, I still document those incredible first hours.
What if I have a C-section?
Every hospital in Colorado has its own policies. Sometimes I’m allowed in the OR, sometimes not. If I can’t be in the room, I coach your partner or support person to capture photos and then I’m right there afterwards for your moments all together as a family.
Do you photograph everything?
Only if you want me to. Some clients want crowning shots, others don’t. My focus is always on the emotions, connections, and story… the way your partner looks at you, the strength in your body, the moment you meet your baby. You get to decide how much or how little is captured.
How many photos will I receive?
On average, 100 fully edited images. Some in color and some in black & white. Enough to tell the complete story without drowning you in duplicates.
How private are my photos?
Your birth story is yours. I never share anything without your clear permission. Some families love sharing their images publicly, others keep them completely private… and both are equally respected. Your privacy and consent is absolute priority. Do you photograph everything?
Only if you want me to. Some clients want crowning shots, others don’t. My focus is always on the emotions, connections, and story… the way your partner looks at you, the strength in your body, the moment you meet your baby. You get to decide how much or how little is captured.
What if you miss the birth?
Babies come when they decide it’s time. If I miss the exact moment of birth, I still arrive to document your first hours together. I also work with a trusted community of backup birth photographers in Denver if I’m at another birth or unavailable that will seamlessly step in on my behalf.
What’s the cost? Do you offer payment plans?
Birth photography is an investment. Most families choose a payment plan, and I happily offer them because I believe everyone deserves their story preserved. I also offer discounts for BIPOC & LGBTQ+ families. If financials are the largest barriers between you and getting your birth photographed please don’t let that keep you from reaching out. I am happy to offer a sliding scale. I stand firmly in the belief that birth photography can change the world.
Why not just hand my partner a phone?
Because your partner is a part of the story, too. They deserve to hold your hand, whisper encouragement, cry with you, and be fully present… not stress about angles, lighting, or trying to remember to pull out their phone. My role is to handle all that while they stay immersed in the moment.
Do you also act as a doula?
Yes! I offer both birth photography and doula support in Denver (the full “doulatog” experience). That means you don’t just get someone documenting your story—you get a trained support person holding space, offering comfort, and capturing every detail.
I would be honored to document your story
Hiring a birth photographer in Denver, Boulder, or anywhere in Colorado is about more than pictures. It’s about preserving the story… the strength you didn’t know you had, the way your partner looked at you, the exact second your baby was placed on your chest.
Years from now, you’ll look back and remember not just what happened, but how it felt. and be transported back to that exact moment.
